Chris Browne (he/him)
Lab PI
cabrowne@umich.edu • NCRC 028-3081N • (734) 764-9543
Chris is an assistant professor of chemical engineering and a scholar within the Michigan Program for Advancing Cultural Transformation (M-PACT). He did his postdoctoral work with Chinedum Osuji at the University of Pennsylvania, studying phase separation of liquid crystals; his PhD work with Sujit Datta at Princeton University studying elastic turbulence and flow in porous media; and his undergraduate work with Stephen Beaudoin at Purdue University studying surface adhesion.
Chris is from northeastern Ohio, where he goes hiking, biking, and kayaking with his family. He is an avid boulderer and rock climber, and enjoys traveling with his wife Jordana to find the best climbs and mountain treks.
PhD Students

Joaquina Somma (she/her)
PhD Student
jfsom@umich.edu
Joaquina did her undergraduate studies at University of Delaware. Her research centered around using 3D-printing and fluid dynamic principles to model and study pediatric upper-airways with Prof. Catherine Fromen. At U-M she studies elastic instabilities in polymer solution flows for geothermal applications.

Jackson Carter (he/him)
PhD Student
jacacart@umich.edu
Jackson is interested in studying polymer solution flows and the elastic instabilities they can produce. He did his undergraduate at the University of Colorado, where he worked with Dr. C. Wyatt Shields IV in designing 3D printed microparticles which move in response to externally applied fields. He has also completed an internship at a biotech company called Somalogic in his hometown of Boulder, where he used his fabrication and coding skills to explore and improve the company’s proteomic assay washing procedure.
Jackson is from Boulder Colorado, and loves skiing, hiking and playing golf. He is an avid sports fan, watching and cheering on his hometown teams whenever possible.

David Amirsadri (he/him)
PhD Student
damirsad@umich.edu
David is from East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and holds a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Rhode Island. There, he had the privilege of studying polymer-grafted gold nanoparticles with Ryan Poling-Skutvik. David will be investigating the impact of grafted polymers on interfacial flow instabilities.
Outside of academics, David is passionate about classic cars and enjoys exploring the city of Ann Arbor and the surrounding community.
Undergraduate Students

Sophie Bee (she/her)
Undergraduate Student
sophbee@umich.edu
Sophie is currently a freshman undergraduate student at the University of Michigan studying Chemical Engineering. She is currently exploring her research interests with the Browne lab. She grew up in Maryland and enjoys running, playing the piano and guitar, and trying new restaurants.
