Cooperative size sorting
We use hydrogels as a model system to study how deformable particles pass through porous media: for example, to model hydrogels in enhanced oil recovery or cell sorting in microfluidics. We study how lone particles are halted at tight constrictions, but can pass through when multiple particles cooperate to restrict flow and increase deformation. This work helps to inform real-world applications and provides a straightforward way to sort particles based on size.
